Tuesday morning, I woke late but feeling far more human than I had the day before. Getting up, I made coffee and poured a small bowl of granola for breakfast. It wasn’t much, but it was real food which was more than I’d gotten into myself the day before.

After breakfast, I took a long, hot shower. The steaming water cleared my head, scalding away the lethargy and dread of the last few days. Whatever was going on at Paragon, I had to know. Hiding from the truth was only making things worse.

Steeling myself, I pulled clean clothes out of the closet and tugged them on, pulled my hair back into an efficient bun at the nape of my neck, and slipped my feet into my favorite fuzzy socks. Then I went downstairs.

I left all the lights in my house off so that no one would suspect I was home and drop by. Turning off my phone, I made a fresh batch of coffee and settled in my office with the reports I’d brought home, determined to get to the bottom of things. Once I got started, the accountant portion of my brain took over.

Dissociated from my feelings and deep in the flow of professional work, the day dissolved around me. Hours bled into one another as I dug deeper and deeper into Paragon’s transaction records. I surfaced briefly around three in the afternoon to eat something, then returned to my work. Reams of handwritten notes sprawled across the lined pages of my notebook and colored dots appeared all over my digital copy of the files as I tracked, tabbed, and calculated.

Just after seven p.m., I set down my pencil and stared at the figure circled in red on the final sheet of my notes. Two million dollars. Someone had taken just over two million dollars from Paragon’s accounts in the last three years. It was impossible to say specifically where it had gone—that was beyond my ability to track with the information I had. But I could say with certainty that it had gone out of the company into a privately held account—or accounts—somewhere. Accounts it had no business ending up in.

Embezzling, I thought numbly. Someone at the highest levels was embezzling from Paragon.

If the indicators were to believed, Jack had known about it, too. I could tell from the reports he’d compiled, the inquiries I’d found record of in his files. He didn’t seem to have left any specific notes on his investigation. Maybe he hadn’t wanted whomever was responsible to know he’d caught onto them.
